Energy – The Role of Coal in a Carbon-Constrained Economy – Part 1

Short Course
November 17, 2009
Glenhove Conference Centre
Melrose Estate
Melrose, Johannesburg, South Africa
Southern Africa has significant reserves of coal. This has led to its long term usage for power generation, coal-to-liquids, metallurgical products and the sustainability of a host of smaller scale industrial activities.
However, awareness of the global warming impact of fossil fuel usage for energy production is gaining momentum, and with this must come a realistic approach to developing alternative energy resources, in parallel with the more sustainable use of coal (in a cleaner way) in the short to medium term.
This colloquium is the first of two events. Its purpose is to provide a forum for a review of different energy options and the assessment of the most sustainable and cost-effective energy mix for southern Africa in the future carbon-constrained economy.
